Kevin is a geek, and wears this badge of honor with pride. His wife, Heather, has been partially converted to geekdom as is shown by her slightly newfound love of science fiction movies and TV shows. This weekly Podcast is about their lives together and a dual perspective on how technology fits into their world.
Kevin's geekery started at a very young age. He has always been fascinated with technology. At the age of seven, his parents purchased a Commodore 64c for use by the children in the family. Soon after this purchase, Kevin was programming simple programs in the BASIC language. Due to monetary constraints, this was Kevin's only computer for some time. However, during his sophomore year in high school, Kevin's friend became the owner of a Packard Bell with a 100MHz processor and running the newly released Windows 95. Kevin spent much time on this computer playing games, and helping his friend add hardware and keep the machine (which broke often) running. It was also during this time that Kevin and Heather started dating.
Kevin's dad gave him a computer as a present when he graduated from high school and he used this during his first couple of years in college. Over the years Kevin has picked up multiple programming and scripting languages and also dabbles in web design. He has also recently learned about Linux and other open source software, and used this knowledge to setup a MythTV system in Kevin and Heather's home.
Kevin has a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and a passion for all technology. Listen to the podcast for more details on just how geeky Kevin is.
Heather wasn't really a geek as a child, although she did own and play on a Nintendo Entertainment System. During her school years she was more interested in the social aspects of life than technology. In spite of this, she still fell in love with Kevin and learned to enjoy some of the same things as him. Heather admits to being a fan of science fiction on film and TV, but she does not enjoy all the same shows and movies as Kevin. On the other hand, Heather enjoys watching certain reality TV shows that Kevin refuses to watch.
Similar to Kevin, Heather's hobbies center around creativity. However, where Kevin would be creating a web site or building a computer, Heather creates jewelry. Most of her work is with beads, and you can find it for sale at the Bitter Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in Roswell, New Mexico. She also plans to sell it online at some point in the future.
Heather has recently started using MySpace and as a result has been able to get back in touch with old friends that she had lost contact with some time ago. Listen to the podcast for more information about what Heather does for fun.
